Video cards that use the 3DFX chip (Voodoo brand etc.) no longer have driver support for DirectX libraries 8 and above. As Rugby 2004 requires DirectX8.1 or higher these video cards are no longer supported.
Microsoft Windows-compatible mouse, keyboard and any game controller that is 100% compatible with DirectX 8 (Direct Input). An 8 Button, Analogue Joypad is recommended for full functionality.
-------------- Action - Keyboard - Joypad
Select - S - Button 1
Run - Cursors - Directional pad
--------------- Player Movement - You will need to sprint, just keep (spacebar/Button 8) held down to continue sprinting. However even professionals get tired, so keep an eye on where your support is, and don't go running off on your own, otherwise the ball might get turned over. Rucks - As everyone knows, forwards just bundle themselves into rucks without any thought for their personal safety. Due to this your role will be Scrum half (if you have possesion) and you will be deciding on your next move. You have the choice of passing to your backs (A or D/button 5 or 6), jinking round the side of the ruck (E or Q/button 2 or 4) or kick (W/Button 1). If a ruck forms and you haven't got posession you'll be in control of someone in the defensive line. You can change who you choose to control (left shift/button 7) so you can be ready at any point in the line. Watch their scrum half closely, as he gives away subtle clues as to which way he is going to pass. If you're good you could get an interception as he passes it out, or if you're quick you could tackle the fly half behind the gameline so that he looses ground! Scrums - Winning a scrum cleanly and effectively needs alot of skill, timing...and button presses! Pick your set play or defensive line up (in the demo you only have the choice of one type) Wait until the forwards pack down and then feed the ball into the scrum (S/Button 3). You then have to be quick and hook the ball (Q/button 4) and drive (Hold down E/Button 2 & cursor/directional pad). If you've timed it right you'll start going forward. However bad timing could drive you back and even collapse the scrum! Once the ball is at the no. 8's feet and you cannot drive any further, activate the set play (S/Button 1) and watch your backs do their thing. If you find that the opposition have worked out the set play then you can take control at any time by just running (Cursors/Directional pad) in a different direction. Lineouts - Although hard to master, they are a beauty to watch when everything goes right! Again, timing is essential. You control both the hooker throwing in and the jumper, and you have to get the button presses just right otherwise the ball will be caught by the oppostion or go right over the top of the line. The easiest person to throw to is the number 1 jumper at the front of the lineout. When you're ready to take the throw, activate the lineout (S/Button 1) and watch the camera move behind the hooker. If you're throwing to the front press cursor/directional pad down and watch the forwards move into action. When the jumper is being lifted press W/Button 1 and the hooker will throw it right to him. You'll now be able to drive (E/Button 2 and cursors/directional pad) and the pass, jink or kick just like you can from the back of a ruck. Once you have mastered throwing to the front you can try to the middle and the back. You can also try confusing the opposition by attempting dummy jumps. For example, press cursor/directional pad Up so that your back jumper goes up, watch the opponents jumper go up too, then throw a sneaky pass to the front jumper, who will be unopposed!
Kicking - Be careful in open play when kicking, the opposition will close you down very quickly! Make sure you have plenty of room between you and the opposition otherwise you will end up face down in the dirt! When place kicking, watch the corner and stadium flags closely, as these will show you how strong the wind is, and in which direction it is going. To take a place kick move the arrow around with the cursors/directional pad and stop the power bar with S/Button 1 at the top of the power meter.
