We have a vision: NO MORE cocky, bragging, selfish, immature Cheaters flaunting their ability to "get away with it" in the Online Multiplayer world. Our ambitious mission is simply to level the "Online Playing Field". It seems that the more popular an online multiplayer game becomes, the more it is attacked by those who would gain an unfair advantage over their competitors by exploiting bugs or outright hacks of the game's original code. Cheaters have banded together and openly tout their "abilities". They sponsor websites and other forums where information about how to cheat is disseminated. It is high past time for honest people to fight back and that is what PunkBuster is all about - catch the vision with us!
We recognize that many games include options for "cheating" in the single-player versions of those games and that is fine for some folks. However, in multiplayer games, cheating ruins the competition exactly like it does in any sport or other competitive activity. Until now, there has been no way to effectively combat online cheating and the most popular online games all die early deaths when honest people get fed up and move on to other arenas where the cheaters haven't yet taken over. Over the past few years, game designers and publishers have poured countless resources into curbing the premature death of their most popular games only to have witnessed the explosion of intentional and increasingly arrogant online cheating right in their collective faces.
With PunkBuster, our client/server approach is unique, even bold and daring. It requires the willful cooperation of honest online players, organized league officials, and server administrators along with an element of trust. We recognize that. However, we also believe that by working together and standing up to the punks who get their twisted kicks from destroying fair competition unchallenged, that the whole online community and multiplayer atmosphere will improve tremendously. No longer must organized leagues fold after losing player after player and team after team due to so many instances of obvious but unpunishable cheating.
All we ask is that you try it out and give us feedback to help us improve our product. Currently the PunkBuster system only supports one online game: Half-Life (and its various mods such as TFC and CSTRIKE) by Valve Software. With success in that realm will come other supported games and together we can make a difference one less cheat at a time. Please download the client version of PunkBuster - there is no cost. If you believe in our effort, please send us detailed information about cheats that you are aware of and we'll build countermeasures into a future version. You will never have to return to download a new version of the software since it is patched over the Internet automatically and transparently as you play. The software is tiny and consumes virtually zero bandwidth and system resources on your Internet connection and computer system. Please tell your friends about PunkBuster.
